Spannend leven lusteloos verfilmd
Luc Besson, regisseur van Léon, The Fifth Element en Nikita, weet wel raad met sterke vrouwelijke personages. Tenminste, als ze mogen rennen en schieten. Zodra ze van vlees en bloed worden blijkt het wat lastiger. Bijna tweeënhalf uur zonder achtervolgingen, vechtpartijen of andere fysieke actie, het is teveel gevraagd van de Fransman. En dus is zijn waargebeurde drama, over een vrouw die vanuit het niets de politieke hoop van het onderdrukte Birma wordt, niet de stomp in de maag waarop je zou hopen.
