Oppenheimer wint Oscar voor beste film

De duizelingwekkende indiehit Everything Everywhere All at Once, over een uitgebluste vijftiger (Michelle Yeoh) die ontdekt dat ze in staat is om parallelle universums te bezoeken, was op voorhand de grote favoriet bij de uitreiking van de 95ste Academy Awards: de film was elf keer genomineerd en won de afgelopen maanden zo’n beetje elke belangrijke prijs in Hollywood. Dat EEAAO zowel de Oscars voor beste film als beste regie (voor het duo Daniel Scheinert en Daniel Kwan, dat eerder het bizarre Swiss Army Man maakte), stond eigenlijk al vast.

Wel verrassend was de zegereeks in de acteurscategorieën: naast het gouden beeldje voor de Maleisisch-Chinese actrice Michelle Yeoh werden ook de bijrollen van Ke Huy Quan en Jamie Lee Curtis bekroond. Alleen de prijs voor beste mannelijke hoofdrol ging niet nar EEAAO, maar naar Brendan Fraser voor zijn bejubelde comeback in The Whale.

De andere grote winnaar van de avond was het komische drama Poor Things van Yorgos Lanthimos. Zo ging de Oscar voor beste vrouwelijke hoofdrol naar Emma Stone, voor haar vertolking van Bella Bexter in Poor Things. Daarnaast won de film onder andere Oscars voor beste bewerkte scenario, beste production design en beste kostuumontwerp.

De prijzen voor beste animatiefilm en beste documentaire gingen respectievelijk naar Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio en Navalny.
